The Reid Farm is not just a nursery, food forest and homestead. We offer consultations for people interested in growing their own food on their own property, no matter how small or large. We come to you! We offer installation of the plants and trees that we sell in our nursery. Live in an HOA restricted community and want edible landscaping? No problem! Want to start your own food forest, but not sure where to begin? We can help with that, too. Start to finish, from choosing the plants and trees, mapping out and installing the proper irrigation and installing the plants and trees - we are here to help you!
The Reid Farm offers a food forest class the last Sunday of each month. Included is a full tour of The Reid Farm, tasting what is being grown and teaching what we have learned about how to successfully grow food year-round. Check our website or Facebook page often, as we add specialty classes when available.
Tindora or ivy gourd is a heavy producer all summer long. The fruits go through 3 different flavor stages as they grow and ripen - all three edible depending on your taste! You can eat them fresh, pickled or cooked. These tasty little gourds start crunchy and green on the inside, similar to a cucumber. As they ripen starting from the inside, they get mildly sour. In the third stage, they turn red, soften and sweeten up. They are commonly used in Indian cuisine.
Are you as tired as we are of dealing with pickle worms and vine borers destroying your cucumber vines, when all you want to do is grow your own pickles? Then tindora is the plant you need!
They also pack the proverbial punch when it comes to nutritional value!
Rich in beta-carotene
Iron (17.50%)
Vitamin B2 (6.15%)
Vitamin B1 (5.83%)
Dietary Fiber (4.21%)
Calcium (4.00%)
A study published in 2011 in the Journal for Diabetes Research showed a significant reduction in blood glucose in type 2 diabetic patients of 16-18%!
With all its nutritional benefits, why wouldn't you want to include this useful plant in your food forest? Need more reasons? No problem! Tindora grows easily, is a prolific producer and is virtually pest and disease free!! A good plant even for the beginning-est (official gardening lingo) of beginners!!
